Abbottstown, PA (September 16, 2023) – Freddie Rahmer secured his fourth consecutive track championship with his Brian Montieth Classic win on Saturday night. Rahmer’s 14th win of the season was worth $5,000 as the track honored seven-time track champion, Montieth.
Cameron Smith, the new driver of the #69, took the lead over Dylan Norris when the green flag flew. Tyler Ross was up next to Norris to challenge for second at the line but Norris held the spot.
The yellow flag came out on lap 1 when Billy Dietrich fell off the pace and headed to the pits. The top five for the early race restart were Smith, Norris, Ross, Freddie Rahmer and Troy Wagaman.
Smith had a solid restart ahead of the field as Rahmer drover under Ross for third. Rahmer and Ross raced side-by-side at the line with Rahmer taking third by a nose. They continued to race wheel-to-wheel through turn 2 with Rahmer taking the solid advantage down the back stretch. Wagaman got by Ross for fourth.
Rahmer went to the bottom in turns 1 and 2 to get under Norris and moved into second on lap 6. Freddie tried a slider for the lead in turns 3 and 4 but could not make the pass. Wagaman continued to make his charge to the front getting by Norris for third.
Rahmer dove under Smith as they raced into turn 3 but Smith took the spot back before they crossed the line. Lapped traffic loomed ahead as Rahmer made the pass for the lead and took the top spot on lap 12.
Wagaman made quick work of Smith and moved into second. Smith stayed close and was challenging Wagaman trying to take the spot back. Troy’s charge was put to a halt when he had a flat tire on the front stretch bringing out the caution on lap 15.
Norris also had a flat tire under caution as he was running third. After things calmed down, the top five for the restart were Freddie, Smith, Ross, Brandon Rahmer and Aaron Bollinger. Wagaman rejoined the field.
Freddie drove through the middle of turns 1 and 2 on the restart, pulling away from Smith. The yellow flag flew again on the restart for debris on the track. The caution allowed Norris to rejoin.
Ross looked to the outside of Smith for second on the restart but Smith held him off. Tyler didn’t back down and was all over Smith for the runner-up spot. Ross’ persistence finally paid off as he moved into second on lap 18. Smith tried to reclaim the spot but ended up losing a position as Bollinger got by him for third.
Rahmer entered lapped traffic with 9 laps to go and the lapped traffic was heavy with 5 laps to go.
Australian driver, Lachy McDonough, spun in turn 4 bringing out the caution on lap 26. Robbie Kendall did a 360 spin and McDonough was collateral damage.
Freddie led Ross, Bollinger, Brandon and Smith for the late-race restart. Ross looked to the outside of Rahmer for the lead on the restart but could not make the pass. Bollinger was right there as well to challenge for second. Cory Haas was working on Smith for a spot in the top five and made the pass on the final lap.
Rahmer scored the win 2.200 seconds ahead of Ross. Bollinger crossed the line third and Brandon was fourth. Haas completed the top five.
Kody Hartlaub Back in Victory Lane
After winning the first two races of the 2023 season, Kody Hartlaub had been kept out of victory lane by a slew of drivers, but that changed on Saturday night. Hartlaub scored his third win of the season and maintained his spot at the top of the season point standings.
Pole-sitter, Tylar Rutherford had the advantage as the field raced into turn 1. Frankie Herr challenged Rutherford down the back stretch for the lead and Herr would lead lap 1.
Jayden Wolf got by Joe Timmins for fifth before the yellow flag came out on lap 2 when Rutherford, who had been running second, spun out in turn 2.
Herr led Spence, Wolf, Steve Owings and Kody Hartlaub on the restart. Joe Trone Jr. stopped in turn 4 on the restart, bringing out the yellow again. Timmins came to a stop under caution as well.
Hartlaub was working on Owings for fourth and got under Steve down the back stretch moving into fourth on lap 4 before the yellow flag flew again. Jake Galloway was off the pace and Nick Yinger was backed into the wall in turn 2.
The top five for the restart were Herr, Spence, Wolf, Hartlaub and Owings. Hartlaub was all over Wolf for third and made the pass coming out of turn 2. Hartlaub had a heck of a run down the back stretch and was quickly closing in on Spence. Hartlaub took second on lap 12 and closed in on Herr and they entered lapped traffic. Kody got under Herr as they raced through lapped traffic. Spence then went after Herr for second, but the caution came out on lap 15 as Justin Foster was off the pace coming out of turn 4.
With five laps to go the field lined up behind Hartlaub, Herr, Spence, Wolf and Owings. David Holbrook came to a stop before the field could refire. Once the green flag dropped Hartlaub shot off like a rocket as Spence challenged Herr for second.
Nick Yinger brought out the last caution of the race on lap 17 when he spun in turn 2.
Herr had a better restart this time, but could not challenge Hartlaub for the lead.
Hartlaub took the checkered flag 1.812 seconds ahead of Herr. Spence finished third and Wolf crossed the line fourth. Owings completed the top five.
