Courtney Picks Up Win in Weikert Warmup

For the third time in five races at Port Royal Speedway, the winning Weikert Livestock 410 sprint car driver started from 9th or further back to pick up the win and claim an extra $300 on top of their winnings. Tyler Courtney was the driver on May 18th to do just that as he prepared for a bigger weekend to come at The Speed Palace.

Courtney would start on the outside of the 5th row and charge his way into the top 5 inside the first 4 laps. Garrett Bard, in his second year of full time 410 sprint car racing, would start on the pole of the A-main event and would lead the opening 17 laps of the race.

Bard would battle with the driver of the Clauson-Marshall 7BC through the corners of the speedway, but the Kubota High Limit Racing driver would overtake the Port Royal Speedway regular in the third turn and not look back.

Courtney would take home a $5,000 winner's check as well as earn an extra $300 for his driver to the front from his 10th place starting spot on top of $500 courtesy of Valley Supply for being the night's hard charging driver. His check at the end of the evening would total $5,800.

"That was the reason for coming here tonight," said Courtney in victory lane when talking about making the unscheduled trip to Port Royal Speedway. "I'm excited for next weekend and seeing this place packed full of fans."

"We spent the first 3 years getting our butts kicked here in Pennsylvania," added Courtney, "to be able to end the year the way we did here last year and come out strong here again this season makes you feel good. The Weikert is a really big race and the Tuscarora 50 at the end of the year so this is a good place to be good at."

Spencer Bayston, also a Kubota High Limit Racing regular, would come from 8th to finish in the runner up spot, and Austin Bishop would finish in 3rd. Mark Smith would win the J&S Classics Warrior Award after Tyler Courtney pulled the 23 chip in victory lane.

In Selinsgrove Ford super late model competition, there were many movers and shakers throughout the main event, but it came down to the final corner which saw Colton Flinner overtake Trever Feathers and pick up the $5,000 check at the end of the night.

Flinner, who was the track champion in 2022, hasn't won at Port Royal Speedway since the loss of his father who battled cancer and was and

continues to be a large part of the driver's passion for racing.

Bryan Bernheisel and Gary Stuhler would make up the front row in the spring championship race, but it would be fourth starting Trever Feathers who would take the lead off of turn number 4 and lead all but the final lap in the race.

Colton Flinner would start 9th but fall back to 11th before he began his slow charge to the front with 17 laps remaining.

Over the course of the next 17 laps, Flinner would begin picking his way through the rest of the top 10, and would find himself restarting in 3rd with just 4 laps to go.

On the ensuing restart, Flinner would battle with second place running Dylan Yoder and would get by the driver of the 24 car off of the fourth corner with just 2 laps remaining as he crossed the line.

He would then set his sights on the leader Trever Feathers in an attempt to rope him in and pick up the big payday at Port Royal Speedway. Coming down the backstretch, the 2 cars were side by side battling for position, but it would be the 48 of Flinner who would cross the line in first position, leading the deciding lap.

When the driver from Allison Park, PA pulled into victory lane, he took a moment to try to gather his emotions and thoughts as he took in what it was like to be in victory lane at Port Royal without his dad.

"This means the world to me. I wish my dad was here, I miss him like crazy," said Flinner in his winning interview. "I doubt myself this whole year that I would be able to do this without him. My dad's my best friend and doing this without him is incredibly hard."

When talking about his performance in the 25-lap A-main Flinner said: "Honestly this is the worst car I've ever driven in my life. I had a handful. I didn't have powersteering. I don't know how I did. My dad, that's how I did it."

Trever Feathers would finish the race in the second position and Dylan Yoder would hold on to 3rd holding off the night's Lauver's Concessions hard charging car Coleby Frey who started in the 22nd starting position.

For the Zimmerman Truck Repair limited late models, Trever Feathers would start on the pole immediately after finishing the super late model race, but it would be Ryan Zook would would claim his second victory of 2024 at Port Royal Speedway.

On the opening set of corners, there would be a three wide battle for the lead between Feathers, Jaxton Garmin, and Trent Brenneman who started in the 3rd position, that would see Brenneman come out in front to lead the opening lap.

Brenneman would lead the opening 10 laps of the race before Zook would overtake him in turn 2 and hold on for the win.

Zook on top of his win, set 2 new track records at Port Royal Speedway, setting the new 8 lap track record at 2:30, topping the old record held by Andrew Yoder by 5 full seconds as well as the new 20 lap track record at 6:38.443, topping the old record by just under 22 full seconds.

"You can't complain about the start of the season we've had so far," said Zook in victory lane, "It's tough to keep this momentum, but we're going to ride this wave until it crashes."

Jaxton Garmin and Trent Brenneman would round out the podium finish for the limited late models.

Port Royal Speedway will be back in action on May 25th and 26th for the Bob Weikert Memorial weekend with High Limit Racing. Saturday will include the Selinsgrove Ford super late models, and Sunday, on top of the $75,000 to win main event, the Zimmerman Truck Repair limited late models will also join the card.
