YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Danny Dietrich, like any driver, wants to finish the year strong and build momentum going into the offseason.
The management team at BAPS Motor Speedway provided the venue and the event. And Dietrich had no problem taking advantage of it.
On a brisk evening in front of a big crowd, Dietrich charged from his seventh-place starting spot and disposed of Troy Wagaman Jr. on a late restart to claim the York Excavating Les Stewart Sprint Showdown. The win was worth a fat $25,000 payday.
“I can’t believe how good we were all night long from time trials, to the heat race, and in the feature,” Dietrich said. “I was hoping to get to lapped traffic and then kept getting cautions, and I was second here, and I just needed to get in front of him.
“I wanted to get in front of him and didn’t want to get all the way across. I don’t know if I hit it perfect or not. I know he got a run down the backstretch, but I kind of had position on him, and it’s $25,000. I drove it deep into three, and I have to get on the level of some of these guys and how hard they race. This was just one of those moments.”
Wagaman jumped out to the lead at the start but had his pace slowed on the second circuit when Dylan Norris spun in the second corner, and Derek Locke tipped over. The second restart was much like the first with Wagaman surging out front.
Dietrich moved up in the order when Justin Peck couldn’t take the green. By the time Lap 5 was complete, he was up to third after blasting around Jacob Allen through the third and fourth corner.
Chase Dietz was all over Wagaman for the top spot when the caution was displayed on Lap 14. The lapped car of Domenic Melair spun in Turn 4 and collected Cameron Smith, which gave Dietz another shot at the lead on the restart.
Wagaman was able to duck under a Dietz slider and maintain the lead. The Mike Heffner entry built a 1.262-second lead by the 20thcircuit, but Dietz and Dietrich were coming and closed the gap to .465 seconds by Lap 24.
Dietz made a bid for the lead one lap later. He failed in his attempt, which allowed Dietrich to close and take over second by the completion of Lap 26. Two laps later, Mark Smith rolled to a stop on the frontstretch, which set up a three-lap dash to the finish.
Dietrich wasn’t about to wait. He uncorked a slider and made the pass through the first and second corner. Wagaman got a run down the backstretch, but Dietrich shut the door and drove away at the end to take the victory.
“I left a lane out there, and as soon as I heard him roll out of the gas to turn underneath me ... I just wanted to stall so he couldn’t cross my bumper,” Dietrich said. “It’s just hard racing. It’s worth the price of admission and what the fans pay to see.
“Troy is doing a great job. He got the last [win] here. If not for the caution, he probably wins that one. Hats off to my guys. They work their butts off. We had something a little different going on. There are a lot of moving parts in this race team, and hopefully, we can start off next season how we ended this one.”
Aaron Bollinger started 16th and charged to an impressive second-place finish. He passed Wagaman on the last lap to take the position. Jacob Allen and Dietz completed the top five.
In the FXG Sign and Label/Dickey’s 602 Modified main event, Adam White dominated the competition and drove away to a 11.433-second victory in the 50-Lap event.
Jax Yohn grabbed the early lead and led the first seven circuits. Bryce Bashore took over for one lap before White, who started third, put his car out front and drove away from the field the rest of the way.
Bashore and Yohn completed the podium. Michael White and Jordan Henn completed the top five in the main event.
There were a pair of Enduro events to close out the night. Christopher Reichert topped the Big Car Enduro, with Carl Davis Jr. leading the way in the 50-Lap Small Car Enduro.
