Abbottstown, PA (June 2, 2024) – After 35 grueling laps, and holding off the hottest driver in Central PA, Troy Wagaman celebrated with a much deserved wing dance in victory lane after winning the $10,119 Steve Smith Tribute Race, “I was the #19 for a long time and it means a lot to win this race.”
Even from the cockpit of his sprint car, Wagaman knew what a thrilling race it was for the fans, “That was fun Lincoln right there, I hope you guys enjoyed it.”
Saturday night’s win was Wagaman’s second of the year at Lincoln, his first coming at the Ice Breaker to kick off the season. Wagaman has been fast all year and lined up fifth for the start of the feature, “I knew with Freddie starting second and Danny seventh, I had to get there and there early and then dictate the pace and do what I wanted in lapped traffic.” Wagaman’s plan worked and he scored one of the biggest wins of his young career.
It was the Rahmer brothers, Brandon and Freddie, who led the field to the drop of the green flag with pole-sitter, Brandon Rahmer leading the field into turn 1 as Tyler Ross moved into second and Freddie Rahmer in third. Ross challenged Brandon for the lead right away but it would take 10 laps before he could make the pass for the top spot. During those 10 laps Freddie and Troy Wagaman were right behind the two front runners reeling them in.
Ross used the bottom of the track to get a nose under Brandon and made the pass for the lead coming out of turn 2. Once Ross got by, both Freddie and Wagaman moved into second and third sending Brandon back to fourth. Wagaman was on the move and got by Freddie for second on lap 12.
After taking over the lead Ross moved to the top of the track with Wagaman using the bottom to get around the track. Wagaman rolled the bottom and got by Ross on lap 16 to take the lead.
While all eyes were on the action at the front of the field, Danny Dietrich was making his way up through the field from his seventh starting spot.
Just as things were getting exciting on the track, the caution flag waved on lap 21 when Glenndon Forsythe slowed on the track. Wagaman had been leading with Ross and Freddie swapping the second spot right behind him. The running order for the top five on the restart was Wagaman, Ross, Rahmer, Dietrich and Cameron Smith.
Wagaman had a great restart and went low into turn 1, Rahmer got high allowing Dietrich to get by for third. Danny then made quick work of Ross and moved into second with 12 laps to go.
Dietrich was following Wagaman’s line around the 3/8-mile oval, running the bottom in turns 1 and 2 and the top in turns 3 and 4, when the caution came out with 9 laps to go. Tim Glatfelter sat spun around in turn 2 with a flat front tire.
The restart with less than 10 laps to go was key for Wagaman to hold off Dietrich’s charge to the front. Wagaman stayed on the bottom with Dietrich trying the top on the restart, giving it everything he had. Dietrich also tried the bottom in turns 3 and 4 but could not make up the ground needed to catch the hooked up #27 Heffner machine.
JJ Loss earned the hard charger bonus driving from 17th to an 11th place finish.
Scott Fisher Dominates 358 Action
Logan Rumsey and Jake Galloway started on the front row of the 20-lap feature Saturday night with Galloway spinning in turns 1 and 2 on the start bringing out the yellow. The field lined up for a complete restart with Adam Carberry moving up to share the front row with Rumsey.
Rumsey and Carberry raced side by side for the race lead with Rumsey holding the advantage at the line. Scott Fisher was running third as the two battled for the lead. Frankie Herr sat backwards in turns 3 and 4 bringing out the caution on lap 2.
Carberry was all over Rumsey on the restart as cars battled three-wide behind them for position. One of those cars was Doug Hammaker, who was making his way up through the field. Jude Siegel and Eric Paxson got together in turn 4 bringing out the yellow on lap 5.
Once again, Carberry looked to the outside of Rumsey on the restart and the two raced wheel to wheel at the line. Carberry took the lead and then Rumsey spun in turns 3 and 4 bringing out the yellow.
Carberry paced the field with Fisher in second and Hammaker in third. Adam got a solid restart with Fisher holding off Hammaker. Fisher had reeled in Carberry and was putting pressure on the leader using the bottom of the track. Fisher moved into the lead with a good run off the bottom of turn 2 with 10 laps to go. After seeing that the bottom was fast, Carberry moved his line down, but Fisher was too far gone. Fisher continued rolling around the bottom and was closing in on lapped traffic as the laps wound down and had caught the tail end of the field with the white flag waving.
Fisher’s victory was his fifth career win in the 358 division at Lincoln.
